Film Identification Guide

Not sure which film you have?

If you are holding an undeveloped roll, read the film name, format and processing instructions on its box or cartridge. Keep the film sealed while you identify it.

01

Colour Negative

C41 Film

Look for C41 processing instructions on the box or cartridge, then choose the marked film format, such as 35mm or 120. The appearance of a developed negative is not a way to identify a sealed, undeveloped roll.

02

Monochrome Negative

Black & White

Check the film name and processing instructions. Not all black & white films use the same chemistry: ILFORD XP2 SUPER uses C41. Ask the film team if the correct service is unclear.

03

Transparency / Slide

E6 Film

Look for E6 processing instructions on the packaging. For example, KODAK EKTACHROME E100 is an E6 reversal film. Do not choose a service from the brand name alone.

04

Older Formats

APS, 110 & 126

Found an unfamiliar cartridge or an old camera? We still process several discontinued and specialist film formats.

Still not sure?

We can help identify your film.

Send our Didsbury lab a photograph of the sealed cartridge and any box or label, with the film name and format visible. Our team can help identify the service without you opening or unrolling the film.

Since 1954 Photographic lab experience

Our Photographic Heritage

Film has always been part of what we do.

DS Colour Labs has been part of photography since 1954. Long before digital photography became the norm, film processing and traditional photographic printing were at the heart of the lab.

Today, that experience sits alongside professional Fuji and Noritsu technology, allowing us to process everything from freshly shot 35mm and medium format film to specialist formats that haven't been manufactured for years.
